HOW TO GAIN MUSCLE FAST

When learning how to gain muscle fast it's not just about what to do, it's also about what not to do.

Here are some of the primary reasons most trainees don’t grow:

This post was made by Iron Addict .

1. You overtrain and under eat. These are listed as the main primary reason because they go hand in hand and BOTH must be balanced or you can forget growth. The most perfect training regimen will fail miserably if diet is not there to support it. And conversely, the most perfect diet will be wasted if the trainee is doing more workload than they can recover from—most do WAY too much!

2. The training workload is not varied. Doing the exact same lift the same way stops being productive for most trainees within 3-6 weeks. Once the body has adapted to the loading it must be changed if you are to continue to force the body to adapt.

3. Too much focus on isolation exercises, not enough compound work. You can do all the “small” lifts until you are blue in the face, but until you are moving big poundage’s in the big lifts you will remain small. Which brings up point #4.

4. You MUST squat and deadlift if you are going to reach your bodies growth potential. Think it through. Doing squats or deads activates 70-85% of the bodies overall musculature in one move. Doing a set of curls maybe 3-5%. Which sends a big signal that the body better get better at synthesizing protein and better at handling the need to grow as a unit? You will NEVER reach your potential without doing the squats and deads.

5. You constantly fluctuate between lifts that have bad carry-over. Here is an example:

I have seen many times, and one I have done myself. The trainee burns out on benching and decides to do Hammer Strength Benches for a change. He makes the switch and is jazzed. His Hammer press is going up every week and he is stoked. After a time he has added 50 lbs to his Hammer bench and decides to go back and hit the bench, only to find it’s up a whole 10 lbs!!!!!

That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with Hammer Benches. It just means that the lifts are dissimilar enough that an increase in one may not necessarily help increase the lift on another. Use of stabilizers and inter and intra-muscular coordination are two primary reasons, along with neural recruitment pattern gains that don’t apply well to the other lift.

6. You don’t know when to de-load/cruise  , or take time off. NO ONES body takes a constant pounding of hard training without periods of active or full rest recovery. Until you learn how and when to do this your training will never be optimal

7. Your micro-nutrient support SUCKS! I can’t count the number of guys I have seen trying to build great physiques taking a “one a day” vitamin and thinking they have it covered. If you want great things out of your body, you need to put great fuel in it.

8. You train with the intensity of a arthritic old lady. Nuff said.

9. You have no clearly defined goals. Most people just “lift to get bigger”, and while this is a fine goal, not having any strength related goals will kill your progress in the long run. Your primary goal should be getting stronger on the big lifts on a CONSTANT basis. Setting short and long-term strength goals and achieving them is what equals a big strong trainee in the long run.

10. You are inconsistent. Getting excited about your training and killing yourself in the gym only to burn out and few weeks later and miss a bunch of sessions ends up being 1 step forward, 3/4 steps backward for many trainees. Getting and staying consistent and racking up sustainable gains over the long-term is what it’s about.

I'll be updating blog with answers i get from emails and forums to go along with your answers!

When i first started bodybuilding it took me a while to learn what all the terms meant so i've listed the most commonly used bodybuilding terms to get beginners up to speed.

BULKING UP
Gaining body weight by adding both muscle and fat

 BURN
The burning sensation in a muscle that comes from lactic acid and ph build up when exercising the muscle to failure

 CHEAT REPS
When muscle fatigue begins to set in a bodybuilder can use improper form to complete the movement. Using a swing or a jerk which allows the surrounding muscle groups to assist in the movement.

CIRCUIT TRAINING
A workout technique in which the individual goes from one exercise to another doing only one set per exercise with little or no rest between sets. Individual gains some aerobic benefits at the expense of maximum muscle strength gains.

CUTTING UP
Stripping the body of excess body fat while retaining maximum muscularity

 CYCLE
A length of time set aside for specific types of training like cutting, bulking up, strength training. Another meaning is taking a supplement for a specific period of time. For example taking Creatine you would have a loading phase, a maintainence phase and stopping phase, all together would be the complete cycle.

DEFINITION
Extremely low body fat added to superior muscle separation and vascularity

 DIALING IT IN
The process of training and dieting to get shredded for a competition.

INTENSITY
It can mean that the pace you are training at is higher than normal, as in taking shorter rests between sets. It can also mean that the weight you use during those sessions is heavier than usual. It can also mean that the workload within a given time period, combined with the weight and pace is increased.

ISOLATION
A technique that focuses training on an idividual muscle, without secomdary or assisting muscle groups being involved. An example is the seated dumbell concentration curl which only works the bicep and no other muscle group.

JUICE

The abbreviated word for Latissimus Dorsi which in Latin means 'lateral muscles of the back'

MASS
Mass basically means size. If you are adding muscle mass you are adding muscle size.

MUSCLE CONFUSION

NEGATIVES
The lowering of a weght against gravity, specifically, resisting gravity by lowering the weight slowly and under control.

PEAK
When a bodybuilder prepares for a competition they cut their body fat to an unusually low level to bring out maximum muscularity that can only be maintained for a short period of time.

Best Way To Build Muscle

Always remember muscles are not made in the gym. Muscles are broken down in the gym and are made when you eat right and take enough rest.
When trying to find the best way to build muscle it's important not to let your ego takeover. Don't be worrying who is watching you, so you try and lift heavier weights than you normally would. The quickest way to injury is lifting weights that are too heavy, which makes you lift with improper form.
I would say that you should spend no longer than 45 minutes in the gym and train every muscle no more than once a week.
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is thinking the more they train the bigger they will get. Beginners never give their muscles enough time to recover so keeping their muscle gains to a minimum.
Personally i would rather give myself more time to recover than not enough time to recover, then at least you've got the full gains from your training session and you feel ready to go again for that particular muscle in the next workout.
If your going to the gym and your lifting the same weight as the last visit but you find that you've done 1 oor 2 reps less than the last time that usually means your overtraining and your muscle hasn't recovered 100%. You should be increasing your reps every time you go to the gym. Your reps should never decrease.
If you feel that you've given a particular muscle plenty of time to recover yet your weight and reps are remaining the same then you will have probably hit a "Plateau"
The best way to build muscle and get out of a plateau is to change your rep range. Try using different weights so you can get your rep range between 4 - 12 reps. For example use a weight to go to failure in the 4 - 6 rep range one week. Then the next use a lighter weight to go to failure in the 10 - 12 rep range. The next week use a weight to go to failure in the 6 - 8 rep range. This way you are not letting your muscles become accustomed to what they will be lifting and should have you bursting out of that plateau in no time.
Remember it's not natural for your body to grow massive so if it can get away with just staying the same size it will. It's up to you to keep changing your rep range and your routines so your body stays in a constant state of growth.

One of the biggest pieces of advice i could give any bodybuilder is don't neglect training your legs. Training legs usually splits bodybuilders into 2 categories, they either love training legs or they hate training legs.
Aswell as gaining muscle mass, bodybuilding is also about symmetry and proportion and trying to sculp that  'X' shape in terms of overall look and nothing looks as ridiculous as an overdeveloped upper torso in relation to an underdeveloped set of legs.
What some bodybuilders don't realise is that training your legs properly greatly affects your overall muscle growth. Quadriceps, Hamstrings and Gluteus are the largest muscles in the body and training them produces more anabolic hormones than training smaller muscles like your triceps so including hard and heavy leg workouts in your routine increases the size and strength of muscles all over you body.
So in order to get maximum gains on your upper body don't neglect training your legs!

No amount of supplements can ever take the place of a good quality bodybuilding diet but there are some supplements that can make a great addition. These are some of the top bodybuilding supplements i would recommend :-

  • Casein Whey Protein
  • Creatine
  • Multi-vitamins and minerals
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids
  • Post Workout Recovery Drinks
  • Green Tea

                                                       CASEIN WHEY PROTEIN

Cassien Whey Protein is a supplement that is best taken just before you go to bed. Casein is a slow releasing protein so it gives your body a constant source of protein during your longest period without food, which is while your asleep.

                                                                CREATINE

Creatine is a supplement that works best the more intense your workout is. Creatine is naturally found in meats and in our muscle cells where its used for high intensity muscle contractions. The benefits of creatine are an increase in strength, the ability to train more intensely and for longer followed by faster training recovery.

                                             MULTI-VITAMINS AND MINERALS

Vitamins and minerals are a very important part of the bodybuilding diet. Many vitamins need minerals to do their job properly.Bodybuilding puts extreme demands on the body so a bodybuilders body has a greater need for vitamins and minerals. Many vitamins and minerals are antioxidants, have an anti-imflammatory effect and are used for the recovery and repair of muscles so adding a high quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is a must for every bodybuilder.

                                                     OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS

Omega 3 is known as a "good fat" and has many health benefits. It can't be produced by the body so must be included in your diet. Omega 3 is primarily used to help your brain and body to function properly rather than just being stored as fat.

                   Health Benefits Of Omega 3

  •  Cardiovascular
  •  Boosts Immune System
  •  Maintains Joints And Bones
  •  Helps Moods

                  Bodybuilding Benefits Of Omega 3

  •  Assists In Muscle Growth By Enhancing Testosterone Levels
  •  Assists Liver In Breaking Down Protein To Build Muscle
  •  Speeds Up Metabolic Process For Fat Loss

Omega 3 is found in wild salmon, mackeral, tuna, kiwi fruits and walnuts

                                           POST WORKOUT RECOVERY DRINKS

The best post workout recovery drinks contain whey protein and simple carbs. Taking your post workout drink straight after training will keep your body in an anabolic state. Whey protein is rapidly absorbed by the body and simple carbs will restore glycogen in the muscles. Both of these combined taken within 30 minutes after training speed up the recovery process after an intense workout

                                                              GREEN TEA

Green tea has many benefits for health, well being and bodybuilding. A cup of green tea after a meal will aid digestion. It also has a greater antioxidant effect than many vegetables and is a great way to rid your body of free radicals after an intense workout. Green tea also inhibits the bodies process to deposit fats and raises your resting metabolic rate so is a top slimming aid.

               Health Benefits Of Green Tea

  • Powerful Antioxidant
  • Aids Digestion
  • Boosts Immune System
  • Lowers Cholestorol Levels
  • Anti-Cancer Properties
  • Regulates Blood Sugars

              Bodybuilding Benefits Of Green Tea

  • Aids Endurance During Workouts
  • Aids recovery After Workouts
  • Raises Resting Metabolic Rate
  • Inhibits Fat Deposits

The list of health benefits of Green Tea is endless while it also has some great bodybuilding benefits which makes it a must for every bodybuilder and goes on my list of the top bodybuilding supplements.

Foods To Eat To Gain Muscle

To gain muscle you've got to eat the right food. you have to make sure your getting a good source of carbohydrates, protein and fats in every meal.
Carbohydrates are split into 2 categories which are complex carbohydrates and simple carbohydrates. Complex carbs are best for bodybuilding as they are slow releasing which provides long term energy. Simple carbs have their place but try to keep them for pre workout and post workout forms of energy.

                          Top Sources Of Complex Carbohydrates

                                  Pasta
                                  Sweet Potatoes
                                  Brown Rice
High Fibre Cereals ( Porridge Oats, Muesli, Wholegrain Based Cereals )
                                  Wholemeal Bread

Protein is needed to build, repair and maintain muscles and must be included in a bodybuilders diet at all times. If you don't feed your muscles with enough protein, you won't get the gains you would be getting if you had a good source of protein in every meal

                           Top Sources Of Protein

                                 Eggs
                                 Fish
                                 Chicken
                                 Turkey
                                 Red Meat

Fats also play their part in forming part of a good bodybuilding diet and are split into 3 categories which are polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats and saturated fats. Try to avoid as much saturated fat as possible and stick to polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

                        Top Sources Of Polyunsaturated Fats

                                Oily Fish
                                Nuts
                                Sunflower Seeds

                        Top Sources Of Monounsaturated Fats
                                Peanut Butter
                                Olive Oil

Adding all these foods will give you a well rounded diet and give you the nutrients you need to gain muscle
